Indoor air contaminants in office buildings

This study focused on some important and common indoor air contaminants using as its basis extensive database of indoor air investigations carried out in office buildings by indoor air experts of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health between 2001 and 2006. These contaminants include fungi and bacteria, volatile organic compounds (VOC), formaldehyde, and man-made vitreous fibres. On the basis of this work, reference values for these contaminants could be presented. In addtion, the probability of sensory irritation among building occupants was evaluated on the basis of irritation potency and measurements of common VOC and formaldehyde. This work valuable new information on the identification of problems with indoor air wuality and practical advice on the progress of indoor air investigations.
