Experiences of dry sanitation in Southern Africa

The year 2008 was declared the Year of Sanitation by the United Nations. Sanitation is a pressing development issue as approximately 2.6 billion people do not have access to improved sanitation. Turku University of Applied Sciences and Global Dry Toilet Association of Finland are promoting dry sanitation in Swaziland and Zambia. The projects provide sanitation and hygiene education and build dry toilets for communities. This is a colledtion of articles yielded by the two projects, written by project organisation members, student trainees and researchers. The articles share experiences of the sanitation situations, the reception that dry toilets have received and the involvement of the communities in the development, the management of sanitation projects and the sanitation sector, and the benefits of dry sanitation to the development of the communities.
